Film Magazine Front Cover Analysis - Empire



Masthead- The mastheads typography is large and bold, taking up the conventional 1/5th of the page. This makes it easy and clear to see and grabs the readers attention from the bright colour of red as it contacts against the dark background creating a more dynamic effect, which is perfect when the film being shown is a drama film.

Puff- The puff is very effective as it advertises why the reader should buy the magazine. "our best preview issue ever!" states that the magazine is of high quality and the use of the exclamation mark create a more exciting tone, grabbing the readers attention. The use of using two different colours makes the words "Preview Issue" stand out even more. The typography in in capitals and in bold text which works along side the other factors to attract the reader.

Feature Article Photo- The feature article photo is bright and bold, contrasting against the dark background which makes it stand out. The cover star is looking at the reader which draws the reader in, becoming part of the magazine, making them want to read more. The photo overlaps the masthead, which shows how the magazine is a well established name as they can afford to have the feature article photo covering it, showing that the magazine is a recognised brand.

Coverline- The coverline has bold and large typography in two different colours that contrasts to the dark background. The main white coverline clearly establishes the film title and what the article is going to be about. The smaller yellow coverlines give extra details about the article. They are short sentences which are very catchy and set a mysterious tone about the film/article.

Pictures- The use of the small photos on the front cover add more visual aspects, making it more exciting for the reader. The use of framing them in shards of glass, links the to the cover line "Friendships Shatter" which ties the whole magazine together.

Plugs- The plugs are flush right and use language such as "Plus!" which tells the reader what is in the magazine, making them more likely to purchase the magazine.

Typography- All of the text on this front cover is in bold capital letters which makes it clear, bold and easy to read.
