Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge conventions of real media productions?

Question 2 - Evaluation

Question 3 - Evaluation

Question 3 – Audience Feedback

I have learnt that my target audience understood the plot of the film when watching he trailer due to the voiceovers, use of dialogue and the use of one/two shots, that all work together with the equilibrium. The fact that they understood the plot is good as the trailers purpose is to not only advertise the film, but is should explain the plot so that you have an understanding of the film, without knowing the outcomes. They said that the voice over explained the background story whereas the dialogue explained the present day story. The audience agreed that the two shots and one shots were used to show the character’s relationships.
They thought the music suited the trailer well as it was able to create different tones and levels of tension at different parts of the trailer, while still being part of the indie-pop genre.
The audience also saw that the same font was used as the title on my poster, as the captions and title on my trailer and as the cover line on my magazine. They said this made the film easy to identify and it created a link (brand synergy) between all 3 products, which promotes the film.
I have been successful in the way that my audience all felt as though they gained something from watching the film such as the message of taking risks etc.
Also my aim was to create a product that left the audience wanting more, and this worked as my audience have all said that watching the trailer made them want to go and see the film as it was left on a cliff-hanger.

What I Have Learnt Whilst Filming

  • When shooting in the evening during September/October, the lighting state changes very quickly. This means you have to be very efficient with the time as different shoots may have different brightnesses and may not match up. This is important as in the trailer these clips will be part of the same scene and won't look realistic if the background lighting is different in each.

  • If there is wind or rain, background noise will intercept with the dialogue  you are recording. I need to use 'Dead-cat' which is wind protecter for microphones. This will enable me to have reduced background noise in my clips.

  • I have learnt how to develop my skills in photoshop and also learn new skills by working with iMovie. I have had to learn how to use iMovie by teaching myself what elements are available to me, and even the most simple skill of how to place footage onto my timeline.

  • Time management is very important as you may only have limited time with your cast and there have to work quickly to enable continuotty within your shots.

  • I have learnt that, when filming you may have to differ from your script or plan due to what is available to you. This means you may have to adapt other factors within your trailer (e.g-My plan to have the character of Sam to walk across a brick wall had to be changed due to not being able to find a location that suited my needs. Therefore I found a new location a choose to use train tracks instead.
  • It is really important to go and visit your locations first before the day of filming as things may have changed since you last visited the location or it was different to what you imagined it to look like, which may impact on your filming.

Editing

Here I needed to make the shot lighter as this is a key moment in the trailer where the two chapters meet when they are younger. I felt as thought the shot was too dark as it is important to see their faces. I used the colour correction icon and brightened up the shot.

I have chosen to use the same effect as the one given to the first shot in the Papertowns Trailer, where there is a slow motion zoom in. I used the Ken Burns Effect to zoom in,

I had to make the volume louder by increasing the sound percentage. I did this because the speech was quiet during production and I hadn't realised until post production.

I have used the speed editor in my trailer to change the speed in some of the clips. In these examples, I have used slow motion to emphasise key moments in the trailer as it creates a contest between the normal paced shots and the slow pace shots.

I have used transitions such as Fade to Black to create breaks in trailer, to show different sections in the storyline/plot and also to change the pace.

Here is an example of the use of the Reverse Shot tool. I have used the same shot twice however the tool has allowed me to change the angle of the shot, allowing me to have more content.

Here I have 'Fit to Crop' as there was clutter in the back ground of this shot that I didn't see. I therefore cropped it to give it a more professional look
