What I Have Learnt - Research into Teen Drama Trailers and Full Length Film

From looking at Teen drama trailers, I have found the following conventions:

  • A sense of journey must been shown to create a connection between audience and characters.
  • The pace of the trailer has to differ. It starts of slow and then builds up to a really fast pace and then there is a sudden drop and becomes slow again. This allows the trailer to build up tennis and leave it on a cliff hanger, using this means the viewer is more likely to be left wanting more and therefore will go to see the film.
  • Use of One Shots and Two shots to show development in relationships.
  • Teen drama rely on a good storyline, this must be shown clearly in the trailer. I have found that the best ways to show the plot is through the use of voiceovers and dialogue as well as a series of different shots.
  • You need characters the audience will identify to as it becomes more personal and the viewer will therefore want to go and watch the film, meaning the trailer has served its purpose.
  • The use of music is very important as it can change the way the information is conveyed to the audience. You need music specific to the genre e.g I need upbeat indie/pop music for a teen drama and the start needs to send a positive message and make the audience feel good.
